This is one song that fully deserves being replayed over and over again on every single radio station that has ever played hip-hop. Good thing, cause that’s what’s happening. Lupe is one of the most subtly and simply brilliant artists out there today, and he proves this time and time again by releasing timeless classics like Hip-Hop Saved My Life or by taking the Gorillaz album Demon Days and writing some quick and snappy verses over those awe inspiring beats. In Show Goes On, Lupe’s musical intelligence is immediately displayed with the clever incorporation of the catchiest Modest Mouse chorus ever conceived, which makes those who write off hip-hop for a more indie centric musicology immediately start paying attention. The insanely catchy beat continues throughout the entire song, and its upbeat nature is contrasted with the intensely fervent lyrics Lupe empathetically threads within. Similar to Hip-Hop Saved My Life, Lupe impresses the listener with his epic description of the obstacles he overcame and makes them seriously consider those who are stuck where he started and still unable to escape. He reminds those who “say hip-hop only destroy, tell ‘em look at me boy,” and the listener can’t help but agree. Lupe’s brilliant and unique combination of grave, yet upbeat lyrics with a truly dance-worthy beat ensure that no matter one’s musical preference, any listener can get something out of this song.
